This is the music of nightmares. I don't mean that it's bad, but it is disturbing. The dense mix of sampled voices, beats, musical genres and the general sensation of them all coming at you at once is almost overwhelming. If you are thinking of using any recreational substance or chemical refresher while listening to this then think hard. How tough is your psychological constitution? Put down that fourth can of Carlsberg Special. Pick any track, "God", for instance. Here you'll find a fractured choir, circus/cartoon music, a disembodied preacher repeating, 'How do you speak to God ?' among the other voices that blend with backward running tapes. Then there are a few apocalyptic figures from the horns. Yes, these people play instruments too. In fact, at times, I get the impression that there is music trying to get out of this overstocked closet of noises. But by the time they've spliced one more layer onto the track the voices in your head are saying things you'd rather not hear. On "Fun With The Blues", you just know it's not going to be either. Once again, a voice suggests, 'Now let's have some fun with the blues', while all around a sonic terror develops. Other sampled voices are trapped in the maelstrom and they are not talking to each other. (Multimood/Demos) M`lumbo e Multimood si incontrano in occasione del rispettivo dodicesimo compleanno; tanti sono infatti gli anni di esistenza del collettivo (multimediale e quindi non solo musicale) newyorchese e dell?etichetta svedese, che si è fatta carico di pubblicare in Europa l?ottavo disco di una formazione che fa dell?originalità (non forzata o esagerata, sebbene goliardica) la propria caratteristica distintiva. Cercare adesso di descrivere o comunque di convogliare almeno una parvenza di idea di quanto si può udire in ?The Nine Billion Names Of God? è più che altro contorto, non impossibile. Magari si potrebbe partire dal presupposto che, in certi frangenti, si ha quasi la certezza che dall?altra parte della barricata ci sia una band, sicuramente giapponese, certamente affetta da schizofrenia compositiva, follemente innamorata di jazz (magari quello elettrico degli anni ?70), assolutamente fissata con tutto quanto fa parte del revival anni ?60 (dalle sigle televisive ai cartoni animati, dai film di spionaggio alle orchestre da night club in riva al mare), attirata da ogni forma di campionamento in tempo reale (sia quelli provenienti dall?ambiente circostante che quelli ricercati tra i vecchi vinili), sinceramente interessata al mondo sonoro dell?elettronica e desiderosa di comporre il disco di jazz più contaminato e strambo che si sia mai ascoltato. Il fatto è che poi, nel momento in cui si scopre che il presupposto principale da cui si è partiti (ovvero quello di avere a che fare con un gruppo nipponico) è sbagliato, ci si ritrova quasi smarriti, incapaci di credere che costoro (armati di ogni sorta di strumento a fiato, oltre che di tutta l?attrezzatura tradizionale, ma anche di squeak toys, shoes, fortune cookies, egg slicer, ecc.) provengano ?semplicemente? da New York. Certo che però il fatto che le loro esibizioni al Knitting Factory fossero così apprezzate forse doveva farmi dubitare qualcosa...!

Questo lavoro combina l'accessibilità d'ascolto con l'orgia di suoni e campioni balzellanti su ritmi calipso o d'improvvisazione free. Una vastità di fonti e umori (dal porno, alla radio, agli spot) che con i suoni accosta continuamente nuove tinte e ritagli visivi. Oltre alle tante collaborazioni con nomi noti, va citato il film 'System Noise' (a cui hanno partecipato Gary Lucas e Neotropic) messo su dallo stesso collettivo. .
